AYC Classes

Potential of Aikido

Those who study Aikido correctly desire only to defend themselves without hurting others. To posses this attitude one must achieve a very high level of integration of powers, both of the mind and the body. We must acquire a harmonious combination of physical means and ethical motives.

When Aikido is practised regularly (twice a week is recommended), it helps in developing self-confidence, peace of mind, self defence, physical skill, quickness of body reflexes and weight control.

Aikido is an effective means of self defence but offers more than that. Aikido is not a sport; it is a Martial Art Way. It develops the mind and body as one. In sports, a competitor is competing against others and the goal is to win. The Martial Art Way is a lifetime of developing mind and body. the goal is to improve personally to be better today than yesterday and better tomorrow than today. Aikido helps us to live in harmony with ourselves and others.

New Members

Beginner classes are available daytime, evening and on weekends. These classes are taught by Kimeda Sensei and assisted by qualified black belts. As a beginner you learn warm-up exercises, breakfalls and basic Aikido techniques. We recommend two classes a week for beginners. New students can join at any time.

Once past beginner level, classes are available seven days a week. Students learn advanced techniques as well as how to handle weapons (sword, knife and stick.)

If you are interested in joining AYC, you can request additional information by sending an email to signup@aikido.ca.

Women's Self-Defence

Many people have asked: Is Aikido an effective means of self-defence for women? In many martial arts it takes time to become proficient. Aikido is based on non-resistance; the Aikido student uses the opponents' energy and power in defending one's self. Therefore, a woman has no difficulty in defending herself against the attack of a much larger or stronger person.

Children's Classes

For six-year-olds and up. Children learn self-defence, coordination and discipline. Classes are taught by qualified black belts. Classes are held Saturday mornings from 10:00am to 11:00am, and new students can join at any time.

Iaido Classes

Iaido is an ancient Japanese martial art which instructs in drawing and use of the sword. Students learn this ancient art of sword movements, self discipline and coordination of mind and body.

Classes are taught by Ohmi Sensei, 6th Dan. Beginner and advanced classes are available. New beginners are welcome to join at the start of each month.

Kenshu Classes

This is an instructor's course available once a week for Aikido students who have reached the green belt level and higher. Students refine techniques, learn advanced weapon techniques, and the philosophy of Aikido.

Clinics and Demonstrations

Throughout the year, AYC offers special clinics, summer camp and demonstrations. The purpose of the clinics is for intensive training, having fun, and getting to know each other.
